ICAR-DCFR commercializes Rainbow Trout Feeds and Recirculating Aquaculture Technology for augmenting coldwater aquaculture production in India
The ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, Uttarakhand, has developed, validated and commercialized high performance rainbow trout starter, grower and brooder feeds and recirculating aquaculture (RAS) technology for augmenting coldwater fish production in the Indian uplands. On 30 April 2024, a memorandum of understanding was signed between ICAR-DCFR and Growel Feeds Ltd., Andhra Pradesh, for the technology transfer and licensing of the rainbow trout feed package. Likewise, the RAS technology was transferred and licensed to Das and Kumars, Varanasi, for its successful propagation.
The salient features of the rainbow trout feeds developed by Dr. Biju Sam Kamalam and team are substantial improvement in growth rate, feed efficiency, size uniformity, flesh quality, reproductive competence and offspring quality, coupled with a remarkable reduction in fish culture duration and health issues. On the other hand, the futuristic and climate-resilient RAS technology developed by Dr. Rajesh and team minimizes water use by 1/100-fold and net productivity of rainbow trout can be increased to four-fold in shorter culture duration.
The hybrid event was presided by Dr. Pramod Kumar Pandey, Director, ICAR-DCFR and was graced by eminent fisheries stalwart Dr. A.G. Ponniah; Dr. Praveen Malik, CEO of Agrinnovate India; Mr. P.S. Narendra, Dr. A. Victor Suresh and Mr. Amit Tandon from Growel Feeds Ltd.; Mr. Harsh Agarwal from Das & Kumars; other distinguished scientists and research scholars.
Dr. Pandey stated that the feed and RAS technologies are important milestones for expanding the coldwater aquaculture landscape and rainbow trout production in India . He also emphasized on the role of private-public partnerships in developing impactful technologies for fish farmers.
